SUMMARY:SILVA Network Annual Conference: Communication – a neglected topic in higher forestry education and further education?
DESCRIPTION:Human life on Earth can only be sustained with the survival and proper functioning of natural systems\, especially forests. However\, large-scale deforestation and forest degradation takes place in many countries in the world. In other parts of the World\, the unstoppable process of urbanization increasingly leads to the physical and mental separation of people from nature. More and more this is resulting in total refusal of active measures in forests aiming at wood production. In political decision-making and economic processes\, you barely find representatives of forest related sciences. While we are exceeding the limits of our planet’s carrying capacity\, awareness of that wicked problem is limited and nature-based solutions are underrepresented in the political discussions on problem solving. What can professionals of higher forestry education and further education do against the unfavourable processes described here? How can the gap be bridged between the knowledge background and perceptions of forest scientists\, political decision makers and lay men? And how can this be used to adapt the contents of teaching and further education in forest and nature related disciplines? \nThese questions will be addressed in the SILVA Network Annual Conference\, held at the University of Sopron on April\, 11 – 13th 2023. The program includes inspiring presentations and a full-day excursion into the educational forests of Sopron University and the nearby national park. \nIt pays to be quick: An early bird rate applies until February 21st. SUMMARY:Youth Forest Policy Days
DESCRIPTION:This is a conference-like online event organized by the International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA). The objective is to enable the youth community to exchange knowledge and gain more insights about international forest policies. \nThe conference will have well-known forest policy experts that will explain how forest policy works and bring real world examples. It is an opportunity to actively get involved in policy and learn how to make a difference. Meet other youth with similar interest\, network with policy expert and get inspired to take actions. \nThe event is planned on two days with different activities: \n\nWorkshop day: there will be three workshops on capacity building\, soft skills and interaction with experts\, exchange of skills knowledge outside the usual curriculum and networking with fellow students or early career scientists. The Living Library will be presented as an innovative format that raise awareness of the obstacles\, challenges or solutions other people faced in their professional lives.\n\n\nConference day: main focus on the importance of global forest policies\, what they have achieved\, and also where their limitations are. There will be an introduction to international Forest Policy\, the role of youth in forest policy\, with real-world examples of implemented forest policy\, finalizing with a Panel discussion with all major stakeholders.\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Webinar: What’s forest education up to in Africa and Europe?
DESCRIPTION:Are you studying forestry or a forest-related field? Or are you teaching at a university in one of these fields? Great! You might be interested to know that FAO published six regional assessment reports on forest education around the globe in 2021. Those reports reflect on the current status and needs of formal forest education at all levels. Please find the reports on the Global Forest Education Project’s webpage. \nIn the context of FOREST EUROPE’S webinar series “From the roots to the canopy” we cordially invite you to join our online webinar. With this joint action of IFSA\, IUFRO and FOREST EUROPE\, we want to enable a dialogue between Africa and Europe to share key findings of the reports\, and also discuss the results. \nAt first\, the main authors will present the respective regional reports and inform about the current status\, needs and challenges of forest education. Then we jump directly to the discussion: two students and one early career scientist will discuss with the authors about differences in forest education in the two regions\, what Europe can learn from Africa (and vice versa)\, and what needs to be done to enhance forest education. \nThis is followed by a direct interaction with the audience. You will have the chance to ask questions and learn why the reports are relevant for forestry students\, educators and policy makers. We hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Forest skills to pay the bills! The juncture of education and employment
DESCRIPTION:The event will be organised as a 90-minute side event at the 15th World Forestry Congress. First\, an overview on the state of play of green forest jobs within the pan European region will be presented by the Thünen Institute (Germany). This is followed by a series of dialogues by four representatives of different stakeholder groups (employment\, tertiary education\, student and policy). Each dialogue is framed by a video\, presenting results of the EFIIFSA-IUFRO project “Global student networking and green jobs in the forest-sector”. After the panel discussion\, FOREST EUROPE’s “Grow Green Jobs Campaign” is introduced and the audience is invited to follow the campaign on Instagram. Ideally\, new best practice examples of green jobs are tagged after the conference.
