The fourth meeting will present an overview of relevant policy discussions and ongoing FOREST EUROPE work on SFM\, including the state of SoEF data collection and reporting. The meeting will take place virtually on 29 November 2023 from 2:00 PM to 5 PM (CET). \nPlease register for this event here to get the meeting link. \nDr. Bernhard Wolfslehner is responsible for this meeting. DESCRIPTION:FOREST EUROPE develops common strategies at the pan-European level for its 46 signatories on how to protect and sustainably manage their forests (www.foresteurope.org). The idea of this High-Level Policy Dialogue (HLPD) 2023 is based on the Bratislava Ministerial Declaration 2021 as well as the Forest Europe Work Programme priorities and follows guidance provided by the General Coordinating Committee (GCC) to react to emerging issues promptly. \nThe current scenario we are facing at the national and international forestry level leads to a critical debate: How can Sustainable Forest Management maintain and enhance resilience in your forest\, considering social\, economic\, and environmental factors? \nThis event will be hosted by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture in Berlin having a hybrid character. FOREST EUROPE high-level policymakers responsible for forests and forestry and high-level representatives from FOREST EUROPE observer organizations and other interested stakeholders will be invited to this meeting. The interested public can join this event in Berlin or online. \nThe host of this event is the German Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture\, Mr. Cem Özdemir. Our panel discussions in Berlin will bring together ministers and other high-level policymakers with representatives of environmental organizations\, forest practitioners\, researchers\, youth\, and landowners to provide a space promoting shared understanding and synergies in the pan-European region and beyond. \nThe event will have two consecutive panel discussions where participants can interact directly with high-level speakers during the debate. To set the scene\, renowned researchers will present their latest findings. \nCheck our High-Level Talks website to stay updated. DESCRIPTION:Human life on Earth can only be sustained with the survival and proper functioning of natural systems\, especially forests. However\, large-scale deforestation and forest degradation takes place in many countries in the world. In other parts of the World\, the unstoppable process of urbanization increasingly leads to the physical and mental separation of people from nature. More and more this is resulting in total refusal of active measures in forests aiming at wood production. In political decision-making and economic processes\, you barely find representatives of forest related sciences. While we are exceeding the limits of our planet’s carrying capacity\, awareness of that wicked problem is limited and nature-based solutions are underrepresented in the political discussions on problem solving. What can professionals of higher forestry education and further education do against the unfavourable processes described here? How can the gap be bridged between the knowledge background and perceptions of forest scientists\, political decision makers and lay men? And how can this be used to adapt the contents of teaching and further education in forest and nature related disciplines? \nThese questions will be addressed in the SILVA Network Annual Conference\, held at the University of Sopron on April\, 11 – 13th 2023. The program includes inspiring presentations and a full-day excursion into the educational forests of Sopron University and the nearby national park. \nIt pays to be quick: An early bird rate applies until February 21st. Please also keep an eye at the deadline for abstract submission if you are interested to present. \nPlease go to the SILVA Network website to register. Research and the assessment of forest damages and disturbance indicate an urgent need for improving monitoring and reporting. \nTherefore\, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)\, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture\, Regions and Tourism will jointly organize a symposium on assessing forest damage and disturbance in the UNECE region in Vienna\, Austria from 29-30 September 2022. \nThe symposium aims to encourage the exchange of ideas\, experiences and opinions as well as raise awareness about the need for the assessment of forest damage and disturbance. It will discuss new ideas for consistent\, reliable and comprehensive information on forest damage for management and policy decision making. \nParticipants will include national and international policymakers\, forestry related authorities\, forest owners and managers as well as experts from technical and research facilities. The symposium will include keynote speeches\, presentations and interactive discussions around the following thematic sessions: \n\nInternational forest damage/disturbance reporting and assessment\nNational forest damage/disturbance monitoring in the UNECE region\nNew opportunities and methods for forest damage/disturbance monitoring\n\nThe symposium is organized as a hybrid event at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna.
